"-s" is is *not* an optimization switch. It's a size reduction switch,
and it works by removing all the additional information put into the
file by GCC which is meant to enable you to debug the program if it
has any problems. The effect is the same as if you run 

	strip yourprog.exe

after having built it.

Optimization switches are -O<something> and many of the -f<something>
variety. See the GCC docs for details ("info gcc invo optim").
