Who knows? nope. make is a wonderful tool, but it does have its moments. it is very picky about whitespace, which makes debugging it fun. you have to have a long talk with your editor of choice to make sure it isn't getting cute with tabs. Python is the only other thing I can think of offhand that has quite the same sense of humor.
