Let me reiterate the problem.  The issue is how do library functions
detect W2K.  Not application programs, _library_ functions.

It is IMHO inappropriate for a general-purpose library function to
invoke an external program (the shell, which implements the VER
command), especially since W2K is known to not like nested programs
too much.

I agree that, for an application code, running VER is a solution,
along a few others which where mentioned in this thread.
