Subject: GDB runs out of virtual memory
Mime-Version: 1.0
Reply-To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com

Hello.

I was just wondering if someone else had experienced "Virtual memory
exhausted. Unable to allocate nnnnnnnnn bytes" errors with GDB. I recently
had such a problem with my shiny new PC when I tried to debug a program
using GDB in a Windos DOS box. As usual, I pored through the DJGPP FAQ
searching for answers and trying all of its suggestions. Not a single one
of those solutions worked.

I tried debugging the program with GDB using my old PC and it worked. Now
this was a surprise. The ol' clunker with 32MB of memory could GDBug a
2.44MB program without problems while the shiny new geewhizbangthingamajig
with 64MB runs out of virtual memory. Both computers run Windos 98
(4.10.2222 a) and both have the same memory settings for the Windos DOS
box. What in the world is going on??? GDB also barfs out the same message
when I am running under plain DOS with CWSDPMI R5 as my DPMI host.

After much trial and error in removing, reinstalling and installing Windos
device drivers and such, I found the culprit. I had installed Norton
Antivirus 95 on the new PC. When I uninstalled it GDB worked again. Hmmm. I
then reinstalled it, GDB ran out of virtual memory when I tried to use it
again. With the exception of debugging small DJGPP programs (under 1.4MB)
GDB seems to run out of memory with Norton Antivirus installed. It seems
that NAVDX prevents programs from allocating huge chunks of memory.

Is there anyone out there who has had the same/similar experience? I am
running my PC without an antivirus program, and given the nature of my job
(freelance QA/Beta tester) it won't be long before my PC gets stoned...

So if anyone has a way to work around this without advising me to buy
another antivirus program, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards and TIA.
