There are various solutions suggestions in the FAQ section 6.15.  
(it sounds like you already read this, but did you see the note about
redir on NT?)

You can also type `mode 80,50' to switch to 50 line mode if it helps.

Ouch.  What happens if you just type `redir'? - it should print
copyright and usage message for DJGPP redir v2.1.
