Seems like I am not having luck..

I unziped the file freebs12.zip onto my directory (C:\toms\) with the
folders option checked (yes I am sorry to admit I use winzip).

Anyways... I cd'ed into C:\toms\freebe\ and typed 'make' and it gave me
invalid asm statements in all helper.c functions that use them. For
example from "gcc -c helper.c" I get

----
helper.c: In function `trace_putc':
helper.c:47: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:47: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
helper.c: In function `rm_int':
helper.c:160: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:160: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
helper.c: In function `allocate_dos_memory':
helper.c:198: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:198: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
helper.c: In function `free_dos_memory':
helper.c:228: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:228: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
helper.c: In function `allocate_selector':
helper.c:282: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:282: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
helper.c: In function `free_selector':
helper.c:311: Invalid `asm' statement:
helper.c:311: fixed or forbidden register 0 (ax) was spilled for class
AREG.
