You could do worse than downloading Bruce Eckel's books. Price is right, at
least.

C++ is not a particulary idiot proof language, and not my first choice as a
didactic
language. However, if you insist, Lippmann and LaJoie's _C++ Primer_ is
good,
ultimately followed by Stroustrup's  3rd edition. Scott Meyer's Effective
C++ books
 fill in some of the gaps on the thornier constructs.

Much maligned, Schildt sometimes can make things understandable without
going too far afield. If it says 'Jamsa' on the cover, burn it.
