Are you asking about possible reasons for these crashes:

If these problems disappeared in r5, it's probably due to numerous small 
changes and bugfixes introduced in r5.  The main change was that CWSDPMI 
now supports up to 2GB of virtual memory, but that is probably irrelevant 
for the problems like those described above.
