Really strange. And you say that "dir e:\" works fine! You could try
another RAMDRIVE as I know that WINDOZE 4.0 and 4.1 (i. e. 95 and 98)
fails to provide LFNs at about just over 8MiB. Perhaps SECOND EDITION
craps out at even lower values.

Things to try:

1. Make a really tiny RAMDISK and see if ls works.

2. Try a better RAMDRIVE. I recommend Franck Uberto's. fu_<some_thing>
on simtel.net.
