It's an inherent DOS limitation, IIRC. Some parts of DOS, and
definitely most application programs too, make the assumption that the
screen always is 80 characters wide. At least, so the documentation of
SVGATextMode (Linux driver for manual text mode configuration)
claimed, when I last looked into it.
