Another possible cause of the "parse error before (declaration)" is
trying to declare variables after lines of code that don't declare a
variable.  This is legal in C++ but not in the version of ANSI/ISO C
that GCC supports.

Post the shortest complete program that exhibits the problem, and
we'll help you fix it.
