Have you tried three or four simultaneous compiles at the same time,
almost enough to make the machine dig into swap?  Try compiling the
kernel, the kernel modules, and the Allegro library.

Linux uses less memory than WinDOS.  Your hardware flaw may be
in unused memory under Linux but in GCC's memory under WinDOS.
