To get anything over 320x200x8 in Windows NT, you have to use the
Windows API.  NT VDM does not support VESA (video BIOS extensions to
access high resolution).  To use the Windows API, I'd suggest a
Windows version of GCC:
  http://www.mingw.org/
Allegro 3.9.3x works just fine with MinGW.
