Depends on when you get "virtual memory exhausted."

If it's in cc1plus, break it up.  If it's in your code, use YAMD
  http://www3.hmc.edu/~neldredge/yamd/
or some other malloc() debugger.

"the Audio device"?  "another application" on single-tasking DOS?
Is this a Windows error message?

In any case, you might want to see how Allegro handles things, and/or
load the program with cprintf()s to dump critical data structures in
real time.
