v1 was a horrible hack.  Don't push your luck.

Why do you need them to be 16-bit?  Are you trying to run on 8088 or
286 or something?

Is that why?  In that case, you may be able to just link in PMODE/DJ
but you won't get a swapfile.  DJGPP FAQ node 9.6 explains.
