3.12 is the offical "stable" allegro version. All work has moved to
the WIP version which is, in reality, as stable as the "stable"
versions. I would suggest that you go to the allegro homepage

for details on the WIP version which will be multi platofrm and may
provide you with the solution you want already. The allegro mailing
list (also described on the web pages) would be a very constructive
place to ask your questions.

Is it not possible to use different types in your code rather than
changing allegro?
