What `man' does is to find the man page, format it (if necessary)
and then display it.  The viewer used to display the formatted man
page is typically `less', and it's perfectly adequate.  But if you
haven't got `man' installed then you need to find the man pages
yourself, which is awkward if they are scattered all over the place
(as mine are).
