I was under the impression that VBE 3.0 was a superset of VBE 2.0, so that's
probably not the cause.  On the other hand, a colleague once had a card that
claimed to support VBE 2.0, but had a grand total of _two_ VESA modes, which
didn't work well at that.  YMMV.
