That's not the problem. GCC #define's __GNUC__ automatically, all by
itself.

Probably yes. EMX is a port of GNU C to OS/2, which also works on
DOS. DJGPP, which this newsgroup and the makefile.dj2 you used is
about, is a native DOS port of GNU C. So you're at least using the
wrong makefile, but more likely the wrong GNU C.
