You might want to look at the simple graphics example I have at 
http://www.unur.com/howto/c-examples.html.

It shows you how to switch to VGA Mode 0x13, plot pixels and draw lines. 
Not a work of art, but should be good for a beginner.

However, once you feel comfortable with the example, I would strongly 
suggest downloading Allegro.
