I'm guessing that the error message said this:

	makefile:4:***missing separator. Stop.

(Please always cite the _exact_ text of the messages.)

This usually happens because you use spaces instead of TABs in the rule 
commands.  GNU Make requires a TAB as the first character in the rule 
commands.
