You didn't really think you could believe anything MSDN writes about
Unix, did you?

No particular reason. Someone thought it was simpler, that way. He was
right. On Unix, one of the basic principles says "everything is a
file".  It doesn't say somethings are text files and others binary:
they're files. Period.
