It edits a line at a time, using a command-line style interface.  You
type a command, like "i" for insert characters or "d" for delete line,
and then it shows you what the line now looks like.  You have to
explicitly tell it when you want to edit a different line, and of
course you don't get to see more than one line at a time (normally).
