I'd expect from the users of this forum to recommend Emacs instead ;-)
It has several alternative email interfaces (I'm using one of them, as
you can see from the headers of this message).

In my experience, it helps tremendously to have the same familiar
editor and UI at your fingertips when reading mail.  For example, I
can easily compile a sample program someone posts, look up a function
docs in libc.info, search the FAQ, look inside a zip file--all without
leaving the editor and having the mail message in front of me at all
times.

Btw, AFAIK, Pegasus is not free in the Free Software meaning (the
sources are not freely available).
