It's probably not an unintended typo. It hides the word "meme"
which is like a gene only that the ecosystem where it lives and
reproduces is the set(net?) of all peoples' minds (disclaimer:
that's not a precise definition). This "virus" is an excelent
example of a meme. The irony it contains makes it a successful
parasite on peoples' sense of humor. I myself escaped infection
(that is, didn't set it as my signature) only due to the fact that I
send emails to lecturers and TAs and they might get afraid to read
my message :-)
