It could be you have a "winsoundcard" if there is such a thing, which
pure DOS can't see. If you ran the setup in Windows and it detected
the card and saved the settings someplace, then ran it under DOS, it
would load the settings and try to talk to the card, which is no
longer accessible, and bomb.

(I think this can happen with some plug and pray cards, which don't
exist until a plug and pray OS, e.g. Windows, does something to them,
and which go back into limbo when you reboot...)
