With IE 3.02 I get the error "The server returned extended
information" or "Unable to connect, please restart Internet Explorer
and try again" (might not be exact wording).

Between getting those two errors, I was able to connect with DOS FTP
client ok.

FWIW, I often come across FTP sites that cannot be accessed with a web
browser. One site even returned an error message saying I was
rejected because I was "probably using a brain-dead web browser" !
