This is not fixed point, but after rereading parts of the
thread, the following might work for you:

  double src, dest;
  *(unsigned long long *)&dest = *(unsigned long long *)&src;

or

  memcpy(&dest, &src, sizeof dest);

The latter will probably be inlined, when compiled with -O.
