SEER. I'm beginning to think that it might be causing the problem.
It never was very stable. I think that when I re-wrote the program to
use Allegro instead of a kludge for portability, the bug started to
overwrite a more important area of memory. Even before, there were
some crashes but very, very rarely.

Okay, but it's rather long:

Program log:

Calling VRM: mainproc
Init main game engine
Starting main game engine
BUG: FOREIGN OBJECT 0x203202 DETECTED
BUG: Was passed as a parameter from function SIT_DOWN
BUG: Probing object:
BUG: o->name = beefdead:

=============

OB_Check() has just printed o->name in hex, so we see it's 0xbeefdead.
Next thing it tries to print o->name as a string and dies, hence the
crash in __doprnt and _vsprintf below.

OB_Check was called by check_object, which is a bridge between the VM and
my functions in the 'real world'.

check_object was called by callfunc, which is used by SEER to call
'real world' functions outside of VM-space

All of which which suggests that the crash is happening inside the SEER
library.

=================

Ideally I'd like to get rid of Seer, at least temporarily, so
I can see if it is responsible. But it is the backbone of
the entire program, I'd need to find a scripting language
with a C-like syntax, preferably one that supports
compilation into byte-code, rather than on-the-fly interpretation.
Performance is pretty important. Does anyone know a site which
compares realtime scripting languages?
I've only found sites dedicated to non-realtime languages so far.

In the meantime I will try and make the program run inside fsdb.
