You are right. It is fully explau\ined in FAQ 8.14.

I think it is not very kind to say "I know it is in
the faq but I am just too lazy to check", it seems
a little unrespectful to th eperson who spent lots of 
time to write it, don't you think? :-)

Anyway I suppose you didn't want to be unrespectful
and you are just in a hurry, so this is the
answer: you must use -s switch when linking or use 
strip.exe on your .exe file. Both strip the symbols
from within the executable.
