GCC is the GNU Compiler Collection (it used to be the GNU C Compiler) In Unix/Linux you would normally use the command gcc to run the C compiler and g++ to run the C++ compiler. But in DOS, g++ in not a valid filename, so instead the C++ compiler is called gpp (gxx works too, for compatibility with older versions).
