The following works for me:

weak.c:
__attribute__ ((weak)) int x;

gcc -mbnu210 -S weak.c

contents of weak.S:
	.file	"weak.c"
gcc2_compiled.:
___gnu_compiled_c:
.comm _x,4
	.weak	_x
