Here are some tips.
You may use scare_mouse() and unscare_mouse when you want to update the
screen. Further is it better to write direct on the screen if you don't want
to update the whole screen. Because it takes time. And it is not a good idea
to update the screen if nothing has changed like you do now. Why even use a
game loop? Can't you fix it with some function callbacks?
