AFAIK there were several reasons why ID chosed DJGPP for quake. I think
that they wanted a compiler that wass portable and that can be run on a
unix box etc. The mail archives have more on this topic.
AFAIK most of the performance critical code for quake was written in
assembly so the compilers code quality did not play much in there
selection of DJGPP .
Watcom is a legendary compiler and I too get a bit irritated when people
try to bash it up.

Actually considering that over in my part of the world (SE asia) software
piracy is rampant, most people haven't heard about DJGPP or care about GNU
etc. All they have to do is get the pirated cd of WATCOM or VC++ for about
2$ and install it and away they go.
I suppose thats one reason why I get looks of puzzlement when I mention
about how I like DJGPP.
It would be really interesting to find out that if you give a person a
choice were money is not involved (ie like pirated cd's) whether they
would go for Watcom or DJGPP.
