Since Eli Zaretskii suggests that this problem might be specific
to my system, here is my system configuration:

CONFIG.SYS = Not existent
AUTOEXEC.BAT = Not existent
OS = Win98SE
K6-2 500 mhz (AMD)
128 MB SDRAM PC100 4ns
20.4 GB UDMA ATA/66 (WD)
100MB Ethernet Card
56k Modem (ActionTEC)
AWE 64 Gold (Creative LABS)

In case it matters, the computer is homemadre (ie. I built it)
and is not compaq or Hp, or anything else for that matter. At the
windows DOSBOX it runs DOSSTART automatically, and it contains:

SET PATH=c:\FOO\BIN;%path%
FLUSH
DOSKEY
COMPLETE
ANSI

and all of the above are loaded using LH.
