Essentially, the digital-to-analog converters (DACs) in a typical
video card convert 8 bits per channel (R, G, B) to analog. The
leftover 8 bits (32 bits/word - 24 bits/pixel) is often used as a
transparency channel.

Go to Google.com and look up "alpha channel"

Allegro can use PCX fonts created with a TrueType-to-PCX converter.
Get Allegro and TTF2PCX from http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/

I didn't see a cease and desist letter; FreeType.org is just being
cautious.
