first of all THANKS VERY MUCH for you help - i know that there are lots of
manuals and other bits of info re subject - but finding the right info can
take a lot longer than asking a pro...

well i mean ( and please forgive my novicenesssss ;-) hmm - i select a
region then want to shift the whole thing to the left rather then right...
(usually by tab number of spaces but could also want to do it by i
space...)

while we are on the subject - i noticed that selecting a region then
applying command to it (like tab) performs that command - but then
deselects the region (ie makes it inactive) so that if i wanted to do
something to that region again - i have to select the thing again - (am
sorry if there is a simple answer in one of those huge manuals out there) -
is there a way to make it stay active/selected after the certain command
has been done?

With best regards
