The palette generation code has a lot of problems at the moment:
it makes some dodgy assumptions about structure sizes and memory
layouts, and crashes on certain input images. It needs someone
to go over it and try to figure out what exactly is causing the 
crashes, and fix up the code to be a bit more robust/portable.
