I wish to use the DOS version of the GNU tools, commonly known as DJGPP, to 
make firmware for a system with an 8-bit 6502 processor. Does DJGPP support 
6502 in any way? Or is there another free tool?

If you're wondering about license, the firmware will be GPLed; it will 
commonly be run on an emulator in the DOS, Windows, and Linux environments.
