Okay, if a student compiles and links a C++ program with DJGPP, and gets
a File not COFF message when he tries to execute it, that can't be a good
thing.

[1] the same program compiles, links and executes correctly on a school
computer
[2] most of his /djgpp/bin utilities are giving him the same error
(strings.exe for example)
[3] if he copies a fresh version of strings.exe from a cd-rom to his
hard drive, strings.exe executes correctly.
[4] if he runs strings.exe a few times in a row, it suddenly stops
working (file not COFF)
[5] strings.exe has mysteriously _increased_ in size (as compared to
the cd-rom copy)

I'm guessing a virus? Or should I be looking elsewhere?

Nick.
