DJGPP exists in several versions, each with its own bugs.
What compiler and Binutils versions are you using?

How much hard drive space do you have left?
What's the largest value of foo in
  pointer = malloc(foo);
for which nothing breaks and pointer != NULL?
Try starting values around 5000000 (five million) for foo.
