Thanks everyone for help,

I guess the thing that threw me was seeing 
memset prototyped as

#include <string.h>

void *memset(void *buffer, int ch, size_t num);

but in light of recent experience and what I've learnt here, 
I'm prepared to accept that the second argument can't be greater 
than char.

Fair enough, I'll use a for loop.
