The reason for the recommendation is because many beta-testers of this port use Binutils 2.9.1, so this configuration is better tested. Binutils 2.8.1 should work just fine. Make sure you have DJGPP v2.02 installed, though; that one *is* required (i.e., v2.01 will not work).
