That does seem rather excessive.  You might have a look at FAQ section
3.9, which has tips on how to optimally configure things for DJGPP.

If you don't have success with the FAQ's instructions, try posting:

* Your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
* OS version
* Output of `go32-v2'
* Output of `mem'
