Because an editor that decides on its own to modify the name of the file 
that the user typed is evil.

Besides, an editor that is limited to 64K-long files isn't suited to 
programming anyway.

Knowing your operating system is a Good Thing, of course.  But it is also 
a Good Thing to use an editor that is meant for programmers.  Notepad 
isn't.
