The "-o" need to be followed immediately by "hello.exe"

The "-o hello.exe" tells the compiler that you wanted the outout of this
compilation run written into the file "hello.exe".

"-o -v hello.exe" tells the compiler that you wanted the output of this
compilation run written into the file "-v".  Had you also mistakenly
forgot to put "hello.exe" in your command line ("gxx -o -v hello.cpp"),
you command would have succeded and you would have ended up with an
executable named "-v.exe".
