A solution is to use Ada: you'll have the comfort of Pascal and
a portable way to catch & handle IO results via standard exceptions.
There is a free GNAT compiler for DOS (DJGPP family) and a Turbo Pascal
to Ada95 translator (I have an improved version for TP6+ language
extensions)...
