EGCS stands for the Experimental GNU Compiling System. It has always been
the test bed development of new features for GCC (which were then added
later once most of the bugs had been ironed out). The EGCS project however,
is being disbanded as of the release of GCC 3 (I think), in favour of a
single development team.
