Yes, it is :-). On my Pentium-233 it was taking at least 30 seconds,
and for a large amount of time there was nothing visible happening (no
disk accesses).

I have the problem solved now: It was caused by a bug in collect2 (the
C++ "pre-linker"?) which takes a long time to execute if a root
directory is in the PATH, which it was because my network login script
appends several network drives.
