You are behind the times: the polygon functions have supported all
color depths ever since Przemek Podsiadly and Calin Andrian did some
work on them for Allegro 3.1.

I don't know what would cause this problem: it certainly does sound
like using 8 bit functions to draw onto a 16 bit screen, but it isn't
obvious to me why that would be happening (I'm just replying to your
reply, and can't find the original post to get full details of the
problem).
